The internationally renowned reputation of the IRB offers young scientists an excellent environment for scientific career development. The activities of the IRB focus on human immunology using a variety of different state-of-the-art scientific and technical approaches, which allows young scientists to obtain a great insight in the matter. Undergraduate students from many countries have successfully completed their master at the IRB and have easily progressed. The IRB jointly with Swiss and international Universities provides the opportunity to graduate students to obtain a PhD degree with high recognition and offers young Postdocs the possibility to perform in depth scientific training.
The research focused on immunology is shared by all collaborators of the IRB and ranges from cell biology to cellular immunology and vaccinology. To allow such diversity in immunology research, the IRB provides all necessary high end technical platforms. The available equipment at the IRB enables efficient local top-notch investigations and attracts international collaborations.
The IRB provides high-level scientific education both for undergraduate students in the form of short stages and experimental master thesis, as well as for graduate students.
The PhD program is carried out in collaboration with Swiss and foreign universities.
The experimental work is carried out at IRB under the direct supervision of a Group Leader. The program includes seminars, lessons, summer courses and an annual retreat.
An International Lecture Course is organized every year as part of the IRB International PhD Program in Immunology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry.
Lectures are given by visiting experts with international reputations. Currently the IRB has 30 students. Since the beginning of the program 95 PhD theses have been successfully defended.
The current PhD program coordinator is Dr. Silvia Monticelli.
The PhD program is made possible through the generosity of the Gustav & Ruth Jacob Foundation.
Group leaders of the IRB organize and participate in theoretical and practical courses on selected topics addressing immunological research. Swiss and foreign Universities recognize participation and award students with credits. Teaching courses are performed in house and allow students from other Universities to participate.
On demand, the IRB offers, in collaboration with other Universities, the possibility to perform the practical part of master thesis in a research group. Depending on the home University, undergraduate students join laboratories of the IRB for 6-12 month and are offered a student housing next to the institute.
